On Saturday in Tel Aviv they called for new elections and greater efforts to release the hostages kidnapped by Hamas, as well as an end to the military operation in the Gaza Strip. The demonstration was overshadowed by the news that eight Israeli soldiers had been killed during an operation in the Palestinian territory. Shortly before, the Israeli army had announced that eight soldiers had been killed during an operation in the south of the Gaza Strip in the Rafah region. The armored vehicle in which the soldiers were traveling had exploded. An army spokesman later announced that the incident had apparently been triggered by an explosive device on the side of the road.

It was one of the highest casualty figures for Israeli troops in a single day since the beginning of the war against the radical Islamist Hamas. According to official figures, 306 Israeli soldiers have been killed since Israeli ground troops entered the Gaza Strip on October 27.
