According to the ÖAMTC, the traffic jam on the Brenner motorway (A13) towards Italy stretched for 18 to 19 kilometers at midday, and the time lost amounted to more than two hours. The Austrian emergency services were prepared for the scenario. Because the alternative routes were so heavily congested by late morning that it was no longer possible to move forward, the vehicles were diverted from there back to the A13.
Waiting times on the A2 and A10
There were also waiting times when leaving for Italy at the Arnoldstein border crossing in Carinthia on the Southern Autobahn (A2). There, drivers had to wait around half an hour. In Salzburg, heavy excursion traffic in front of the Golling-Werfen construction site on the Tauern Autobahn (A10) caused drivers to lose around one and a half hours heading south.
