The hostage-takers are behind bars on terror charges, a spokesman for the security authorities confirmed, according to the state news agency Tass.
The escape attempt is said to have begun on Sunday morning. The prisoners destroyed the barred window of their cell block and entered the emergency rooms. There they are said to have kidnapped the head of operations, among others. The men were armed with knives and other sharpened objects, it was said. In return for the release of the hostages, they demand firearms, an escape vehicle and safe conduct.
According to authorities, the prisoner escape is currently limited. In other sectors of the prison, surveillance of the inmates continues.
