The boy’s activities on social media helped the police in their investigation: The youth, who was vaguely acquainted with the two alleged robbery victims, who were roughly the same age, fled after the crime but shared his location on social networks.

A 14-year-old and his 15-year-old friend met a group of other young people at Praterstern in Leopoldstadt. “A conversation ensued, during which one of the young people in the group hit the 14-year-old and demanded money,” reported police spokeswoman Julia Schick. The boy also ripped the boy’s cell phone out of his pocket.

Arrested at Stephansplatz

The 14 and 15 year olds ran away and called the police for help. The accused, a 14 year old Syrian, was stopped a short time later at Stephansplatz after the police had easily traced his whereabouts on social media. He was provisionally arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery, denied everything during his interrogation and was subsequently released on bail by order of the Vienna public prosecutor’s office.
