The talks that took place between the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, are very important, especially “on the verge of the third world war.” This statement was made in an interview with Izvestia by the ex-foreign policy adviser to the leadership of the Republican Party in the US Senate Jim Jatras on Friday, December 31st.
“The importance of these negotiations is invaluable now, especially when the world is on the verge of a third world war. But according to press releases, nothing supernatural was said, ”he said.
Jatras believes that Russia should still be wary of provocations from the West.
“Initially, NATO was created with the aim of defeating Nazi Germany with the participation of America and in the absence of Russia. It was a split in Russian-American relations, and Europe is still under US influence. Therefore, I am afraid that provocations from the West, which the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu spoke about, are still worth fearing. There is no reason to hope for the good intentions of the West, given their actions in the past, ”the political scientist said.
He added that he is inclined to believe the United States that they are serious about the Russian position, but doubts that they will keep their promise of non-NATO expansion.
“It is inconceivable that the United States would agree to the terms proposed by Russia. And this should make Moscow think, but what do they want to achieve by issuing such an ultimatum? ” – said Jatras.
Also, the ex-adviser said that Ukraine will never join NATO, but if this does happen, then “Ukraine as such will not remain.”
On December 30, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said that Russia and NATO must take urgent action to restore equal security. He believes that this can only be achieved through long-term guarantees.
On December 29, during a telephone briefing for journalists, a representative of the US administration said that the United States had prepared plans to strengthen NATO and allies in case the situation around Ukraine deteriorated further. The United States intends to discuss with Russia European security, the settlement of the situation in Ukraine in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and in the Russia-NATO Council – a draft treaty with the alliance.
On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. It follows from the documents that the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
