The White House announced the long preparation of Biden for talks with Putin

US President Joe Biden spent several days with a team of senior foreign policy officials preparing for talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, a White House administration official said in a December 30 telephone news conference.

“The President has been preparing for the past few days with members of his senior foreign policy team. Among them, including the Secretary of State [Энтони Блинкен] and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. There were others who took part in the preparation, ”the official said.

The telephone conversations between the presidents of Russia and the United States took place in the late evening of December 30 and lasted 50 minutes. They preceded a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. This conversation became a logical continuation of the talks held in the Russia-US videoconference at the beginning of December.

As the aide to the Russian leader, Yuri Ushakov, said following the conversation between Putin and Biden, Putin made several calls to convey to his American counterpart the idea that Russia would seek security guarantees in the same way as any other country, including the United States, would do. He added that if the safeguards negotiations are successful, it will lead to the normalization or improvement of bilateral relations.

Russian-American talks on strategic stability and security issues will take place on January 10. Thereafter, on January 12, the issue of European security and the situation in Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council and on January 13 with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
