Food waste generated during production and processing is to be reduced by 10 percent. According to Commission figures, almost 59 million tonnes of food waste are generated in the EU every year – around 130 kilograms per capita. This corresponds to an estimated value of 132 billion euros.

The issue of clothing waste is also to be addressed. Among other things, the states want fashion brands and textile manufacturers to share the costs of collecting and treating textile waste.
The basis for the states’ position is a proposal from the EU Commission from last year. The European Parliament agreed on a position in March. The two co-legislators must now negotiate a compromise together, then the new regulations can come into force.
