The first half
The best chance in the game belonged to France’s superstar Kylian Mbappe, whose attempt at the near post was thwarted by ÖFB goalkeeper Patrick Pentz. Austria were present in the tackles, consistent in their positioning and confident in the build-up. However, there were hardly any offensive accents at first. Maximilian Wöber was shown a yellow card in the 16th minute after a foul against Ousmane Dembele.
France showed their individual quality again and again, but without exerting constant pressure. Philipp Mwene was shown a yellow card in the 34th minute – also for a foul on Dembele. In the 36th minute, things got really loud in Düsseldorf for the first time: Christoph Baumgartner was ideally played in the box by Sabitzer, but was stopped by France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
In the 55th minute, Mbappe has the perfect chance to score in a quick attack by the French, but his attempt, free in front of Pentz, goes just wide of the goal. In the immediate counterattack, Philipp Mwene is brought down by Ousemane Dembele, and the Frenchman is shown a yellow card.
Wöber own goal put France in the lead
In the 39th minute, Kylian Mbappe appeared on the right side, brought the ball to the middle and hit the head of Maximilian Wöber, who deflected the ball into his own goal.

The position of Nicolas Seiwald’s partner in the center of midfield was the biggest question mark in the ÖFB team. Rangnick opted for Florian Grillitsch. Patrick Pentz starts in goal, with Stefan Posch, Kevin Danso, Maximilian Wöber and Phillipp Mwene forming the back four. Konrad Laimer, Christoph Baumgartner and captain Marcel Sabitzer will support solo striker Michael Gregoritsch in attack.
As expected, captain Kylian Mbappe, who had to take a few short breaks during the preparations, is in the French starting eleven. Team boss Didier Deschamps is also relying on the expected formation.
