Arjan Malic: From SV Ried to the Champions League?

Malic in the sights of some clubs (Gepa)

The summer break is already over for Bundesliga football club FC Blau-Weiß Linz and second division club SV Guntamatic Ried: The Upper Austrian duo are kicking off their preparations for the coming season today.

The Innviertel team returned from vacation yesterday with the obligatory performance tests. Ried’s youngster Arjan Malic was also (still) there. The 18-year-old Slovenian, who made his breakthrough in the previous season (29 games), is definitely one of the Vikings’ hottest transfer prospects. And even though the defender extended his contract until 2027 at the beginning of the year, there has been strong interest in him for months – both from home and abroad.

One local club in particular is said to be particularly interested: According to OÖN information, champions Sturm Graz have put out feelers for the youth team player. Malic is even said to have already been to Graz to take a closer look at the situation. It would be a steep rise for the defender: in a year he could have played his way from the Ried football academy into the Champions League.

The Styrian team would definitely have the necessary cash: just participating in the premier class would bring SK Sturm a guaranteed starting fee of 18.62 million euros. For Malic, the black and whites would have to invoke an exit clause of over half a million euros. But the deal has not yet been finalized because the Austrian double winners have other personnel matters as their priority for the time being.

Blue-White before graduation

While the Malic deal is not yet finalized, things are looking better at Bundesliga club FC Blau-Weiß Linz when it comes to one or two transfers: Today’s start to summer preparation could already bring one or two new faces in addition to the already signed Oliver Wähling (Osnabrück) and Martin Moormann (Rapid). A central midfielder and a player for the right wing are close to being signed.

ÖFB Cup: LASK starts with derby

City rivals LASK will not return to the training ground until tomorrow, Wednesday. Since yesterday it has been clear who the athletes will open the new competitive season against: Dominik Thalhammer, draw fairy and ex-LASK coach, has given his former club an uncomfortable task – the black and whites have to win against Upper Austrian regional league team Gurten. Without Tobias Anselm: After his loan to German third division team Viktoria Köln, the 24-year-old is moving to league rivals WSG Tirol.

City rivals Blau-Weiß Linz will face the Styrian regional league champions Wildon, while second division team SV Ried will be visiting Röthis in Vorarlberg. Upper Austrian league champions Askö Oedt also have a long away trip ahead of them: The Traun team will take on Hohenems.
