The case was set in motion on January 15th by a report from the investigation department of the Austrian Post AG. The 26-year-old, who had been working as a letter and parcel deliverer at the Mödling delivery base since August 2017, was subsequently investigated.
26-year-old confessed to crimes
The Lower Austrian later confessed to not delivering countless letters and packages from the end of 2019 to the end of 2023, but rather storing them in his basement compartment and also damaging, ripping open or destroying them. According to police information, a total of 802 RSa and RSb letters, 516 parcels or large letters and 464 registered mail items are specifically affected. The accused also destroyed eleven passports, suppressed 147 RSa and RSb return receipts and electronically forged the signatures of at least ten recipients.
“Assignment took several months”
A bundle of documents and packages was discovered during a voluntary inspection in the 26-year-old’s basement compartment and brought to the delivery base in Mödling. “The number of undelivered shipments was enormous; counting, assigning and recording them in Excel tables took several months,” the Lower Austria State Police Directorate stated in a press release.

The 26-year-old’s modus operandi was outlined as follows: Every morning he received a company vehicle and various deliveries. Before loading the packages and letters, the accused neglected to scan them as intended. This prevented the illegal activities from being discovered and traced for a long time.
The man probably took some of the undelivered shipments to his basement compartment during or after the end of his shift. The motive is believed to be overwork. The 26-year-old has since lost his job; he was laid off at the beginning of the year.
