According to the police, those present saw a cyclist and noticed fire accelerators. This was confirmed by Lena Schilling, from the youth council and spokeswoman for “LobauBleibt”: “There were activists in the wooden hut. Fortunately, everyone got out on time.” And further: “I don’t even want to imagine what would have happened if everyone had slept.” So far, one can only puzzle over the motive. “Whoever is responsible for this must have known that there were people in the weather protection,” said the spokeswoman. “We are shocked, but we will not let ourselves be dissuaded from our goal.”
The eight people in the two-story hut on Hirschstettner Strasse in the Donaustadt immediately became aware of the fire and tried to fight it with fire extinguishers, Schilling said. The emergency call was received by the emergency services shortly after 2 a.m. “Since it was a wooden building, it quickly caught fire and then collapsed,” said a fire department spokesman. Fire investigators began their work that very night.
