An investigation into mistreatment and abuse has delivered a damning report to the Scottish boarding school Gordonstoun. Many children who were housed in the boarding school and its facilities were at risk of sexual, physical and emotional abuse, according to a summary of the report by the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry.
“Violent culture”
Until the early 1990s, there was a “horribly abusive and, in some houses, extremely violent culture” there, which was caused by poor leadership, according to the report published on Wednesday. A number of teachers committed sexual assaults on female students, including rape. There was also a culture of silence. Sexual offences also frequently occurred among the children. Girls sometimes entered into relationships with older boys to protect themselves from assault.
The situation has now changed for the better, the report continued. There was a sincere apology. “There were periods in Gordonstoun’s history when abuse was normalised for decades. However, it seems clear that some good leaders have tried to improve the situation over the past 30 years or so,” the chair of the inquiry, Lady Anne Smith, was quoted as saying.
Gordonstoun was founded by the German pedagogue Kurt Hahn, who had previously implemented his concepts in Salem on Lake Constance. Charles’ father Prince Philip, who had himself spent a year in Salem, followed the pioneer of experiential education, who was persecuted by the Nazis, to Gordonstoun in 1934 and sent his son there as well.
