The route between Deutschfeistritz and St. Michael can therefore be reopened to traffic on Friday, June 21, at 11 a.m., it was said in a press release on Thursday.
Towards the north (Voralpenkreuz), the route will be available without restrictions. Towards the south (Spielfeld), space must be kept free over a length of around five kilometers for the slope repairs that are still necessary. “Nevertheless, two lanes will be open as in normal operation. However, these will be somewhat narrowed, which is why a speed limit of 80 km/h is necessary,” says Asfinag.
“Great commitment from everyone involved”
Around 50 people were involved in the clean-up work on the A9. Twelve days ago, extreme rainfall flooded several communities, including in the north of Graz. This led to mudslides on the motorway near Übelbach.
“The fact that this important route with the Gleinalm tunnel was made passable again so quickly is only thanks to the great commitment of everyone involved,” said Asfinag board members Hartwig Hufnagl and Herbert Kasser. “Our employees and the construction companies commissioned to do the work have already put in more than 4,000 hours of work.”
Many more hours would follow, as the final repair of the slopes, some of which had slipped far away from the motorway, would take several weeks. The work is not expected to be completed until the end of August. “And we will of course take a closer look at this section of the road to determine whether further measures may be necessary in the future,” assured regional construction manager Roland Sticker.
