The municipality of Grünbach will not grant any permits for wind turbines on municipal land for the next ten years. The municipal council made this decision on Thursday evening. A corresponding motion was passed with the votes of the ÖVP (10 seats) and FPÖ (4 seats). The five SPÖ municipal councilors voted against the motion. They called for a citizens’ survey to be held, following the example of the neighboring municipality of Rainbach.

A corresponding vote three weeks ago resulted in a majority in favor of the “Schiffberg” wind power project, which the association is aiming for, with three wind turbines in Rainbach and four wind turbines in Grünbach. The People’s Party and the Freedom Party rejected the holding of a public survey on Thursday.

The main arguments against the wind turbines in the local council were landscape and nature conservation. The local community also got the impression that the project promoters had not conducted the desired dialogue with citizens honestly and on an equal footing. The SPÖ Grünbach is now considering whether to force a referendum with a citizens’ petition.
