On Thursday morning, the 19-year-old Ukrainian from the Gmunden district went on a mountain tour along the Mairalm-Steig to the Traunstein with a man of the same age who also comes from Ukraine and a 61-year-old man from Gmunden. After the climb and a rest on the summit plateau, the three men wanted to descend back into the valley via the Hans-Hernlersteig. At an altitude of around 1,420 meters, however, the 19-year-old developed health problems. He made an emergency call via his cell phone.

While the crew of the police helicopter “Libelle OÖ” was preparing the rescue using a rope rescue, the 19-year-old’s 61-year-old companion informed the emergency services by telephone that a helicopter was not necessary and that the man would “be brought to the valley somehow”. The experienced alpine police officer, however, assessed the situation differently and pressed ahead with the rescue of the Ukrainian in distress.
At around 4 p.m. the young man was rescued with the rope and dropped off in the valley, unharmed but severely exhausted and in a trembling and frightened state.
