At least 12 people were killed in a stampede at an Indian temple located in the Jammu and Kashmir region. The incident took place at the Vaishno Devi sanctuary due to unrest in the crowd of those present, as it became known on Saturday, January 1.
Another 13 people were injured and were hospitalized, the condition of some is assessed as serious.
As the newspaper Hindustan Times writes, citing information from the local police, law enforcement officers, having learned about the stampede, began a rescue operation.
A large influx of pilgrims on the first day of the new year is indicated as the cause of the unrest: 70-80 thousand people flocked to the cave temple. The pilgrimage process itself was suspended after the incident. At the moment, the identification of the dead is being carried out.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed regret over the incident and condolences to the families of the victims. Also, the Indian authorities promised to provide financial assistance to the closest relatives of the deceased.
Earlier, on November 11, a stampede occurred in a migrant camp on the Belarusian-Polish border while distributing food to refugees. They surrounded the representative of the UNHCR of Belarus, Mamo Muluseu, who urged those present to keep their distance.
