Cupra got off to a flying start: Appearing on the European market in 2020, not even Corona, delivery difficulties and the war in Ukraine could slow the Spaniards down. From zero to an impressive three percent market share in just four years, even the competition has to pay respect. “They do it through price,” said one person in an interview with OÖN. So what? Good for the customers! Now the Spaniards have presented the completely modernized Formentor.
Rugged face
Cupra calls the new front “Shark Nose”. The logo has slipped onto the hood, the face itself is jagged. Radiator inlets of different sizes characterize the radical, sharp and futuristic look of the Spanish SUV.
Cupra optionally supplies Matrix LED lights, the daytime running light signature now resembles a triangle. At the rear, the triangular, illuminated logo is emblazoned in the middle of the light bar. Below this, two square double tailpipes open up next to the suggested underbody protection.
The Catalans brought sustainability on board, all kinds of materials were produced from recycled raw materials, such as the bucket seats. The door panels, the dashboard and the upholstery were redesigned. The central screen grew to 12.9 inches, the touch sliders are illuminated and the latest operating system works in the background. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be wirelessly linked to the infotainment system. Sennheiser designed the elegant HiFi sound system with twelve speakers.
The Spaniards have brought the Formentor’s assistants up to date. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) gets route information from the route information and GPS data in order to automatically brake before sharp bends or roundabouts. The travel assist takes care of the lane and speed, and the emergency stop, side and exit assistants take care of safety.
The entry-level model Cupra Formentor 1.5 eTSI can be ordered from just 36,900 euros, with the VZ-Hybrid (272 hp) and the VZ-TSI (333 hp) following at the end of June.
The drives
Cupra offers three drive systems for the Formentor. The 1.5 eTSI with mild hybrid technology with 150 hp and DSG (6-speed manual to follow) is already available to order. The plug-in hybrid with a 20.8 kWh battery produces 272 hp and can travel 100 electric kilometers. The all-wheel drive with the 2.0 liter TSI produces 333 hp.
