Now the European Football Championship is really getting started for Austria’s national football team! With the 3:1 (1:1) victory over Poland, the starting position is excellent to advance to the round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams in the worst case scenario – but the ÖFB selection has shown that much more is possible.
An Upper Austrian was right in the middle of things rather than just there: Gernot Trauner scored the fastest goal in Austrian European Championship history with the 1-0 after nine minutes, but had to be substituted later due to injury.

A loud cry of relief after his goal to make it 1-0, followed by a heart-to-heart towards the Austrian fan sector, where his loved ones were also sitting: Trauner was Austria’s difference maker in the first half. Still a substitute against France, the Feyenoord Rotterdam legionnaire immediately proved why he had been nominated by team boss Ralf Rangnick – among other things because of his heading ability, mostly from set pieces, this time after a throw-in – but still from the game.
