The Port of Montevideo took an important step against drug trafficking, highlighted Arbeleche

The Minister of Economy and Finance assured that new technology is key to a modern and agile customs, which will also be a commercial advantage.

The Uruguayan State already has two of the three scanners it acquired for the Port of Montevideo.

The minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Azucena Arbelecheled the presentation of two of the three scanners that the State acquired to place in the Port of Montevideo they came to Uruguay in the last hours. “It allows us to take a very important step in the fight against drug trafficking,” said the leader, who sounds like a possible running mate for the presidential candidate. Uruguay received two of the three scanners to update the control technology in the Port of Montevideo. Both scanners will be installed at the northern access of the port terminal and will begin to operate at the beginning of August, “if the weather helps,” according to the president of the General Directorate of Customs, Jaime Borgiani. This is because the port is undergoing works that are “delayed.” In fact, the third scanner will be installed in the access Maciel, where work is less advanced.

As soon as they are operational, the currently working scanner, which was donated by China in 2009 and which, in Arbeleche’s words, “was left behind in technology.”

An advance in the fight against drug trafficking

The owner of the MEF highlighted the role that the scanners will play in detecting drugs that are trafficked in loads: “It is very important what they constitute in security matter. This government has been very clear in its frontal fight against drug trafficking. Being able to have scanners with technology allows us to take a very important step in the fight against drug trafficking. Monitoring at ports and border crossings is fundamental in that fight,” he said.

Arbeleche also mentioned that it will be an advantage on a commercial level, given that “more and more demand is modern and agile customs“.

Some time ago, Borgiani had pointed out that with the new devices it would be possible to inspect between 75% and 80% of all containers that passed through the Port of Montevideo, whether for export, import or transit. Currently, less than 10% of the containers transiting through the country’s main port are examined.

The scanners were awarded by the Executive Branch in 2023 to the company S2Globalafter a tender in 2022 was void “since no company met the required requirements,” Arbeleche recalled.

In addition to manufacturing and maintenance, the winning company is responsible for the Staff training which will be dedicated to working with these devices. Unlike the current scanner, these will work every day at all hours.
