Italian journalist noted Putin’s confidence in conversation with Biden

Russian President Vladimir Putin found his American counterpart Joe Biden “direct contact”. This is how the columnist for the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, Giuseppe Sarchina, assessed the telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries.

“This time the President of Russia took the initiative, catching the American interlocutor by surprise, who returned to Delaware for the holidays at the end of the year. Putin immediately requested and received “direct contact” with Joe [Байденом]”, – said the journalist.

According to him, Moscow is very confident in negotiations with Washington on security guarantees and has taken the initiative to conduct a dialogue on an equal footing. The author of the article emphasized that the Russian leader made it clear that he was waiting for an answer as soon as possible.

Sarchina also pointed out that Russia knows that in informal conversations Europe does not always perceive the possible integration of Ukraine into NATO positively.

Sebastien Koshar, a columnist for the French portal Atlantico, said that in 2022 Europe could face reconciliation with Russia, which the Russian leader proposed to the European Union. In his opinion, the US policy aimed at the confrontation of the EU countries with Russia hinders the creation of an alliance on the European continent. As the article says, Russia has proposed two documents: one for the United States and the other for NATO. At the same time, Moscow has never thought and does not think about an “invasion of Ukraine”, the Americans are well aware of this, the author claims.

He predicted that US-Russian talks slated for January might end the Cold War and the partition of the continent 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The telephone conversations between the presidents of Russia and the United States, held on the night of December 31, preceded a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders, Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said. This conversation became a logical continuation of the talks held in the Russia-US videoconference at the beginning of December.

Russian-American talks on strategic stability and security issues will take place on January 10. Thereafter, on January 12, the issue of European security and the situation in Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council and on January 13 with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
