The maypole did not fall in the intended direction, but turned and fell into the facade of a pharmacy, the police confirmed a report by “ORF Upper Austria” in response to an APA inquiry. As it fell, the tree severed a steel cable stretched over the houses, which slightly injured a boy’s foot.

Around 100 visitors gathered on Sunday morning to trim the Maypole on the town square in Kirchdorf an der Krems. According to ORF, as the tree was being trimmed, a gust of wind hit the trunk and caused it to hit the facade of a building. The facade and a glass canopy were damaged. The fire brigade carried out the clean-up work.

The ÖTB TV Kirchdorf 1884, which says it has been organizing the erection and felling of the maypole for the town’s marketing department for 35 years, announced in a press release that experts would now investigate the incident in detail. Something like this had never happened before. All those involved were primarily happy that – apart from one minor injury – there were no other injuries to people.
