“Gernot will be out. Even if we make it to the round of 16, it will be tight,” explained Rangnick. That also depends on when the Austrians play their first knockout match – on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. “We hope that he will still be fit to play at some point during the tournament,” said the team boss. “We’re working on that.” Trauner was the only ÖFB squad player missing from the final training session on Monday afternoon in the stadium on the throwing area in Berlin’s Olympic Park.

The 32-year-old Upper Austrian had given Austria the lead against Poland (3:1) with a header on Friday, but had to be substituted after less than an hour due to muscular problems. “I’m very sorry, especially for him, because he has been in top form so far,” stressed Rangnick. In addition, the Dutch legionnaire would certainly have “loved” to play against his adopted homeland.
