Assange reached an agreement with the US Department of Justice to plead guilty to part of the espionage scandal in exchange for avoiding further imprisonment in the US. According to court documents, the 52-year-old Australian has agreed to plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy to obtain and distribute classified US defense documents. However, a court still has to approve the agreement.
Court in Mariana Islands
According to the plans, Assange is to appear this Wednesday before a court in a remote US territory: the Mariana Islands. The island group is located in the western Pacific, north of Assange’s homeland of Australia, and is under US sovereignty. He is then to travel on to Australia. According to US media, Assange is to be sentenced to a good five years in prison – which he has already served in Great Britain.
