“I would like to say that the Australian government has continued to provide consular assistance to Mr Assange (…),” Albanese said on Tuesday.
Specifically, it is the High Commissioner in Great Britain, Stephen Smith, “who accompanied Mr. Assange on his departure from Great Britain, and the Ambassador to the USA, Kevin Rudd, who is also providing important support.” According to WikiLeaks, Assange boarded a plane at London Stansted on Monday afternoon. The plane in which the WikiLeaks founder is believed to be on landed in Bangkok on Tuesday. On Wednesday, a court hearing is scheduled to take place in the Northern Mariana Islands – a US territory in the western Pacific – at which an agreement on his release could be approved with the US judicial authorities.

Agreement negotiated
Albanese has repeatedly campaigned for a solution to the case in recent years. Assange spent five years in a London prison. The US had previously demanded Assange’s extradition. However, Assange has now negotiated an agreement with the US Department of Justice under which he will partially plead guilty and in return be spared further imprisonment in the US, according to court documents published on Monday evening US Eastern Time.
