Tesla is recalling hundreds of thousands of cars in the US and China

In the USA, all “Model 3” cars built between 2017 and 2020 are affected. That comes from a document of the US traffic safety agency NHTSA, which was published on the Internet.

There are therefore 356,000 vehicles. With them, the wiring harness of the reversing camera could be damaged by opening and closing the trunk lid. This could cause the camera to fail. The information became known shortly before the turn of the year through several media reports.

In addition, according to information dated December 21, there are 119,000 “Model S” cars from 2014 to 2021 in the USA. There is a risk of the bonnet opening unexpectedly if a locking mechanism were released. This could “obstruct the driver’s view and increase the risk of accidents”.

200,000 vehicles in China affected

In China there are around 200,000 vehicles. As can be seen from an online statement by the Chinese market surveillance authority, almost 20,000 imported “Model S” cars and over 35,000 imported “Model 3” cars are affected. In addition, there are around 144,000 “Model 3” produced in China, which are also affected by the recall. According to reports, this involves the same security risks as in the US.

Tesla generates around a fifth of its sales in China, the world’s largest market for electric cars. The group founded by Elon Musk has been operating a factory in Shanghai with several thousand employees since 2019.

It is still unclear whether vehicles in other countries will also be affected by the defects and a possible recall.

Tesla had recently made whopping profits in the billions. Entrepreneur Elon Musk’s group is currently building its first European factory in Grünheide near Berlin. However, this has still not been officially approved. According to the Brandenburg state government, Tesla has now submitted the missing documents for the approval process. These would now be checked, a date for the decision could not be named, said a spokesman for the environment ministry of the dpa.

Delays in Brandenburg

Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) woos patience: “It is now important that we continue to do everything we can with the necessary patience to allow the approval process to continue professionally. We depend on it, but above all on Tesla itself, that one in the end legally secure approval is available. “

Elon Musk had hoped that the first cars in Grünheide could roll off the production lines in December 2021 at the latest. Vehicles are already being produced there, but only for internal test purposes. According to Tesla, the start of mass production was always planned for 2022. So far, the company is building its factory through several early approvals.
