The Montevideo teachers union joins the partial strike this Thursday

The Uruguayan Teachers Association (Ademu) called for a 24-hour strike for this Thursday with the aim of supporting the call made by the PIT-CNT within the framework of the anniversary of the 51 years of the coup d’état in Uruguay and also in support of some sectors of the economy that are going through a crisis.

In this way, the union called a rally at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Strike Square and a total strike for 24 hours coinciding with the measure taken by the union center.

This was decided, as published through their social networks, by approving the motion in a union assembly with 1,042 votes in favor, 890 against and 779 abstentions.

The partial strike of the PIT-CNT

In the middle of this month, the union center confirmed that it will carry out a partial unemployment next Thursday the 27th, in tribute to the general strike of 1973, carried out by the workers against the dictatorship, which will include a mobilization in the metropolitan area.

Among the demands of the labor union appears, in addition to labor-related complaints, the “rejection of illegal investigations against militants of the labor movement,” in reference to the scandal derived from the Astesian case for the alleged espionage of the president of the PIT-CNT, Marcelo Abdala.

The unions assured that the strike will be “in tribute to the General Strike against the dictatorship”, but also to demand “for work and solutions to workers in conflict.”

In a statement, they also demonstrated “against the closure of companies, the precariousness of work and the loss of rights”, as well as “in defense of public freedoms and individual guarantees”.

When speaking at a press conference, the president of the PIT-CNT highlighted that “in homage to a general strike that the workers carried out in defense of the democracy, “The need to respect individual and collective rights will be raised in the mobilization.”
