A 19-year-old Austrian, a 37-year-old Moroccan and a 32-year-old from Bosnia are facing serious charges. The trio will have to answer to a jury in the Ried Regional Court on August 21. The public prosecutor accuses the 19-year-old of the crime of rape and grievous bodily harm. The two other men have been charged with grievous bodily harm.
In the indictment issued by the Ried public prosecutor’s office on May 16, the three defendants are accused of severely physically abusing a new prisoner in Ried prison. This is said to have led to broken bones and other serious injuries.
The 19-year-old first defendant is also accused of forcing his new cellmate to insert a pencil into his anus. Since the victim resisted, the accused is said to have carried out the act himself. According to the indictment, the severe abuse lasted for 24 hours. The 19-year-old is said to have hit the victim “like a punching bag”. If convicted, the 19-year-old faces up to ten years in prison. The maximum sentence for the other two defendants is five years each.
