Fatal pyrotechnic accident: ball bomb exploded when ignited

As the police announced on Sunday, the bullet bomb used did not misfire. Rather, the fireworks should have exploded immediately after ignition and fatally injured a 23-year-old. The item in category F4 was bought illegally in the Czech Republic.

The 23-year-old from the Baden district was reportedly killed on New Year’s Eve, and a 21-year-old was seriously injured. The two had met eight other people on a meadow to celebrate.

“No delay”

Originally it was assumed that one of several spherical bombs placed in PVC pipes did not detonate immediately and therefore four people had approached. The questioning of a 25-year-old who was slightly injured on Saturday night, however, brought a different version to light. The quartet – in addition to the three men between the ages of 21 and 25, a 19-year-old – had stood around the PVC pipe to shield the wind. This had made lighting difficult. The 23-year-old should have bent down to detonate the pyro object. This exploded immediately. “There was no delay,” said police spokesman Heinz Holub-Friedreich.

According to the executive, the bullet bombs used are category F4 fireworks. Pyro items in this class are by definition very dangerous. It is only intended to be used by persons aged 18 and over with specialist knowledge. However, none of the parties involved in Klausen-Leopoldsdorf has such evidence. The pyro objects were bought from the later fatality together with other people in the Czech Republic. The bullet bombs were then illegally brought to Austria.

Investigations are ongoing

Further interrogations are now planned in the cause. According to Holub-Friedreich, these are intended to provide information about whom any further investigations are directed against. On Sunday, officials and an explosives expert searched the area in Klausen-Leopoldsdorf for further fireworks that might have been left behind. An explosives detection dog and a police search dog were also involved. However, only remnants of the ignited objects were discovered, it was emphasized.
