European Football Championship: Austria’s victory as a ratings hit for ServusTV

An average of 1.74 million people watched yesterday’s game against the Netherlands on the Salzburg private broadcaster.

It’s not just Austria’s national football team that has every reason to celebrate, having advanced to the round of 16 of the European Championship as group winners – ServusTV is also celebrating. The Salzburg-based private broadcaster is getting top ratings for the ÖFB team’s appearances. All three of Austria’s games easily exceeded the million mark. The game against the Netherlands on Tuesday evening was the most watched so far, with an average of 1.74 million viewers (67.5 percent market share).

The first match of the Austrian national team against France came in just behind with 1.66 million viewers (53.8 percent market share). The match against Poland was watched by an average of 1.3 million people (60 percent market share) on ServusTV. The private broadcaster will also show the Austrians’ round of 16 match next Tuesday (July 2nd) – another top rating is therefore foreseeable.

Even outside of the Austrian national team’s games, there is great interest in the European Championship in Germany. For example, ServusTV recorded an average of 746,000 viewers for the opening game between Germany and Scotland. The second half of Croatia against Italy was watched by an average of 859,000 people.

As the main rights holder, ServusTV has handed over 20 games to ORF, although these are often not particularly attractive. For example, ORF had the thankless task of broadcasting France against Poland on Tuesday evening – parallel to Austria against the Netherlands. 55,000 viewers preferred the public broadcaster in the second half. Significantly more – 438,000 people – watched the analysis on ORF after the matches. These are still popular and have several times more viewers than the countdowns to the following games broadcast parallel on ServusTV.

Even with the Albania vs. Spain match (333,000 viewers in the first half), ORF didn’t have much to gain on Monday in view of the parallel match (Croatia vs. Italy). However, the public broadcaster emerged as the ratings winner with the England vs. Slovenia match broadcast on Tuesday evening (496,000 viewers, first half). At the same time, 370,000 viewers watched Denmark vs. Serbia on ServusTV.

ORF is likely to have strong ratings in the round of 16 and quarter-finals, where two matches will be shown on public television. After that, ServusTV will have the reins alone.

Broadcasts of the European Championship are also booming on stream. Austria versus the Netherlands was the most streamed sporting event on ServusTV On to date, with 831,000 views or 27.5 million minutes watched. The match against Poland had 700,000 views, and the match against France had 600,000 views.
