This was reported by South Tyrolean media. The man, who was travelling with his wife, had apparently slipped while descending the south ridge and fallen 70 metres over rocky terrain.
The woman then alerted the rescue services, it was said. The Pelikan 2 emergency helicopter and mountain rescuers were deployed. According to reports, the helicopter was initially unable to reach the mountaineer due to fog, and only managed to do so after half an hour. The 49-year-old is believed to have died on the spot.
The man’s body was recovered with a cable winch. The woman was picked up and given psychological care.
