From July 1, the HPV vaccination in Austria will also be free of charge for young people between the ages of 21 and 30. Previously, this offer was only available to children, adolescents and young adults between the ages of 9 and 21.
Human papillomaviruses (HPV), which are primarily transmitted through sexual contact, are the main cause of numerous cancers. Around 80 percent of all women and men are infected with HPV during their lifetime.
“The HPV vaccination is the only vaccination against cancer. It saves many lives in Austria every year,” says Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens). “With this offer, we in Austria undoubtedly have one of the best HPV vaccination programs in the world, and I hope that many young people will take advantage of this opportunity and get vaccinated against HPV. Because there is no good reason against the vaccination, but many reasons for it,” says Cancer Aid President Paul Sevelda. In Upper Austria, vaccinations are administered by general practitioners, pediatricians and gynecologists. The vaccination is also available from district authorities and municipal authorities, although people who want to be vaccinated are advised to contact them in advance to express their desire for the vaccination.
