A uniform overall procurement of fire engines throughout Upper Austria is intended to ease the burden on municipal budgets in the future. This is the pilot project that State Fire Service Councillor Michaela Langer-Weninger (VP) and Municipal Councillor Michael Lindner (SP) have jointly launched.
“The aim of the fire departments is to become more and more efficient and sustainable. Our pilot project is intended to enable uniform overall procurement,” says Langer-Weninger. The past has shown that there were large price differences when purchasing the same type of fire engine – up to 160,000 euros, which the municipalities and fire departments had to cover themselves.

“By purchasing everything together, we can guarantee professional equipment for the future and negotiate fixed prices,” says Lindner, pointing to the challenge posed by price increases in recent years.
Whether the fire departments in the municipalities organize their vehicles through collective purchasing in the future or choose the current model of self-purchasing is up to the municipalities themselves.
In addition, the parking spaces for base vehicles – such as water rescue workboats or cranes – are to be subsidized with up to 80 percent of the costs from the municipal department. “These base and special services are indispensable in Upper Austria,” says fire chief and state fire brigade commander Robert Mayer.
A repair bonus is also to be introduced in the interests of sustainability: after around 25 years, municipalities and fire departments currently have to replace their vehicles, even though the vehicles usually have few kilometers on the clock, says Langer-Weninger. Guidelines for general overhauls of fire service vehicles are therefore currently being drawn up. This could extend the service life by up to ten years. “The longer service life would also make it more sustainable,” says the state fire department command.
