“There is a great danger that an even greater concentration of digital markets and an increase in power at different levels of the value chain will take hold,” said Federal Cartel Office chief Andreas Mundt this week at the presentation of the antitrust watchdog’s annual report in Bonn.
The competition authorities must quickly prepare themselves to “deal with the competitive effects of artificial intelligence”. The Federal Cartel Office – like the competition watchdogs of the EU Commission – is taking intensive action against possible violations of competition by Internet giants. “The power of the big tech companies is still the number one issue for us competition authorities worldwide,” said Mundt. The Federal Cartel Office in Germany is conducting seven proceedings against the US companies Amazon, Google, Meta, Apple and Microsoft.
Mundt also sees dangers for consumers. Large corporations are already positioning themselves as gatekeepers and are barely allowing customers access to the systems of other digital service providers.
