Together with her friends, a 29-year-old and his twin brother from the Linz-Land district took the Hunerkogel cable car from Ramsau to the Dachstein on Sunday. They hiked over the glacier to the shoulder climb and climbed the via ferrata to the Hohe Dachstein. For the descent, after a short rest at the summit, they chose the somewhat shorter ascent to the edge of the gorge, which, however, leads over the very steep glacier down to the valley.
After a short stretch, one of the two brothers slipped on the ice, and immediately afterwards his twin brother too. The two men were well equipped with ice ax and crampons, but could not prevent the fall. The second person who had fallen slid almost 200 meters over the steep glacier and almost into the glacier floor.
Witnesses who noticed the incident set off an emergency call.
Cable car employees were able to pick up people with a piste machine and bring them to the mountain station, from where they took the cable car down to the valley.
The slightly injured brothers were orientated and approachable, but were in shock. They sought medical treatment at home.
The weather conditions of the past few days led to currently very difficult and demanding conditions for mountaineers. The rain of the last few days, even at high altitudes, penetrated the snow cover and froze, which turned the glacier into a hard ice slope.
