The successor to long-standing Prime Minister Mark Rutte will be former intelligence chief Dick Schoof, who, with his right-wing conservative cabinet, wants to implement, among other things, the “toughest” asylum policy of all time.

The early parliamentary elections in November were won by Geert Wilders’ right-wing populist PVV. Wilders actually wanted to become head of government himself, but his anti-Islam and anti-European attitudes made it difficult to form a coalition. In mid-March, Wilders announced that he would resign from the office of prime minister. The PVV, the farmers’ party BBB, the liberal VVD and the new anti-corruption party NSC then agreed to form a coalition. At the EU level, the PVV is allied with the FPÖ as part of the European party “Identity and Democracy” (ID).
