Renting a car on holiday: What travellers should consider

A detailed comparison of the offers can be worthwhile.

“In general, when it comes to booking, you can say that if you book early, you get the best price – but if you’re lucky, you can also save a lot with a last-minute offer. It can be worthwhile to compare the offers carefully. It is important that you look not only at the price, but above all at the overall package, for example which insurance is included in the price,” says Thomas Oppenheim, head of the travel agency and rental car services at the ÖAMTC.

He has TipsWhat should be considered when traveling with a rental car:

Control is everything

A relaxing holiday with a rental car begins as soon as you pick it up. If you check carefully, you can minimize the chance of unpleasant surprises when you return it.

  • Check vehicle: Before you can start your journey, the rental car should be carefully checked for damage when you pick it up. “Even small scratches on the car should be noted in the handover report. To avoid unpleasant surprises, everything should also be documented with photos and videos,” says Oppenheim.
  • child seat: If you need a child seat in your rental car, you should book it in advance. The costs can vary greatly depending on the offer – here too, when booking, make sure that there is an extra charge for child seats and compare prices and providers.
  • Carrying obligations: The requirements to carry items abroad also apply to rental cars – so travelers should find out about the applicable rules in advance and check on site whether everything is included. In Spain, for example, all vehicles registered there must have two warning triangles on board.
  • Insurance: In order to be covered in the event of an accident, we recommend a fully comprehensive insurance policy with theft protection and no deductible. The insured sum for liability should be at least one million euros. Glass, rims and tires are ideally also insured.
