More and more women are deciding to have a family later in life. But fertility drops rapidly with age. “In 35-year-olds, around 50 percent of the eggs are OK, in 40-year-olds only around 20 percent,” said Linz reproductive medicine specialist Leonhard Loimer at a press conference.
“For many of these women, in vitro fertilization (IVF) with donated eggs, which costs between eight and eleven thousand euros, is the only option for becoming pregnant. But the number of available donors in this country is not sufficient to meet demand.
Currently, in our institute in Linz alone, seven to ten patients are added to the waiting list every week,” says Loimer. He calls for the law to be adapted “to modern living conditions.”
Egg donation has been permitted in Austria since 2015, and demand has increased many times over since then. Specifically, he wants to increase the permitted age of recipients from 45 to 49 and that of donors from 30 to 32. “So far, donors have only been able to be paid a small amount to cover costs. A higher fee would certainly be a greater incentive.”
By the way, freezing one’s own eggs for later is only permitted in Austria if the woman has an illness that affects her ability to reproduce – such as chemotherapy.
The fact is, however, that only a few healthy patients have this wish. “You have to look at it in a differentiated way: If a 25-year-old has her eggs frozen, no one can guarantee that they will still work 15 years later. Big disappointments are inevitable,” says Loimer. (had)
