New practical guide for ME/CFS

Exhaustion and tiredness are typical symptoms.

Up to 80,000 people in Austria suffer from ME/CFS or myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome. The Medical University of Vienna has now developed a practical guideline with the Austrian Society for ME/CFS.

The severe chronic multisystem disease often affects the immune response, the autonomic nervous system, the vascular system and cellular energy metabolism. As a result of the Covid pandemic, the number of people affected by the most severe form of post-Covid syndrome is still rising sharply.

According to MedUni Vienna, ME/CFS often leads to a high degree of limitations: 60 percent of patients are unable to work full-time, 25 percent are bedridden. The exact causes of the disease are still unclear. Possible biomarkers have been identified in Vienna. These indicate disorders in the immune system or a reduced intestinal barrier function. The connections between infection with SARS-CoV-2 and ME/CFS are also the subject of intensive research there.
