In Bruckner’s footsteps: Digital journey of discovery in Linz

To coincide with the start of the holidays, culture and tourism in Linz are offering new digital discovery tours. The hublz smartphone app focuses on the life and work of composer Anton Bruckner in Linz. In a playful and informative way, children, young people, families and curious adults are guided to Bruckner locations in the city, where they can learn exciting things, listen to music, solve puzzles and earn points. The two tours on offer – the “Anton Bruckner Hunt” for school classes and the search for clues for adults – start on the main square, and you are guided from station to station in 90 minutes via GPS, like a scavenger hunt.

In the anniversary year of Anton Bruckner, who was born 200 years ago, the app is intended to make his life and work come alive in Linz. The digital discovery tours are available free of charge. The app was commissioned by Linz Culture and Linz Tourism. “Culture has great added value for the city in terms of tourism,” said City Councilor Doris Lang-Mayerhofer at the presentation.

For Marie-Louise Schnurpfeil, Managing Director of Linz Tourism, the playful approach is a useful way to learn more about Bruckner. Aside from the two Linz tours, there is also a digital tour along the Symphony Hiking Trail in Ansfelden, where you can hike from station to station all the way to Ansfelden.

What can we learn from the two new tours in Linz? For example, where Bruckner heard Richard Wagner for the first time, where the composer liked to eat and in which choir he raised his voice (tenor).

To match the enjoyment, sweet gifts were also developed for the anniversary year. Master confectioner Leo Jindrak created the Bruckner-Taler, while the Imperial and Royal Court Bakery in Linz created the Anton-Bruckner-Schober, a special yeast guglhupf with sour cherries, which, according to tradition, was one of Bruckner’s favorite pastries.
