The senator of the Graciela Bianchi National Party pointed to the “lack of public education” and to “indoctrination of the left” as reasons behind the poor choice the whites made in Montevideo during the primaries last Sunday; and referred to a “cultural battle” around education.
“If one starts from the belief that this can be reversed with a snap, no. Obviously we have not been able to face the campaign adequately, especially in Montevideo. In general, the metropolitan area has been resisting us for some time, and Montevideo in particular,” said the senator, a regular at making controversial statements, in an interview with Desayunos Informales (Teledoce).
According to her, the poor performance in the country’s capital explained a good part of the party’s poor overall election. And she attributed the first to “sociocultural factors”. “If I get a little deeper, I can say things that can make people angry, like the subject of lack of public education, the fall in the level, which affected us all, not just the government,” he continued; but added that, in addition, “there was a kind of indoctrination towards the left-wing sectors” which is added to the fact that “the kids who do not finish high school”.
“There are 60% of boys between 18 and 23 years old who did not complete higher secondary education. They are illiterate today,” he said, and maintained that “without a doubt” this failure in the educational system explains part of the political capital of the Broad Front.
For Bianchi, the left is indoctrinating
Asked about this, Bianchi said that the left “indoctrinates with the education“And she knows this because she experienced it “from within,” when she was a member of the opposition coalition and also worked in education.
“I experienced it in other times with another level of teachers, based on the belief that we were right and that what we were doing was right and that we were helping people get out of poverty, imperialism, exploitation, everything else. We were admirers of the Cuban Revolution”, he pointed.
“After the end of the dictatorship, I think we all made a mistake, which was the pendulum effect, We confuse authority with authoritarianism. Everyone, whites, Colorados, Frente Amplio supporters. This led to a certain laxity in the control of attendance at educational centers, in the requirement of the level of studies. It included teachers. And then it entered into a very worrying decline,” he added.
For the senator, this “is the “cultural battle”: “When the educational level fails, civic education fails, and so does responsibility, obligation, and effort. This is also evident in the concern we have for important things,” he said, adding that “even carnival indoctrinates.”
“We must stimulate the criticism, “That is what is missing. The lack of level of study, the lack of level of teacher training, the lack of level of legislators, of journalists. That has been noted,” continued the legislator, who assured that “people who want to change must first become aware of these realities.”
