“I do not like what has to do with vanity, with the cult of personality. Why the statues? Very few are respected,” he said in his morning press conference.

In the early morning of January 1, unknown persons demolished a statue of López Obrador inaugurated days ago in Atlacomulco, in the State of Mexico, a neighbor of the capital.
The effigy was promoted by Roberto Téllez, of the ruling party Brunette, who ceased to be mayor on December 31.
The president assured that they did not consult him about this monument and downplayed the damage to the statue, which had its head cut off. “Those who have, that’s secondary,” he said.
Atlacomulco, about 130 km from Mexico City, was a traditional bastion of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), but in 2018 Morena won the mayoralty.
However, the ruling party lost in the 2021 election to an opposition coalition led by the PRI.
López Obrador maintains an approval rating of around 60%, according to various polls, although he is also a polarizing figure in Mexico. In October 2019, he said that when he retires he does not want monuments erected in his honor.
In Mexico, thousands of streets and monuments are named to honor historical figures, although it is rare that there are tributes of this nature for politicians in office or who have just finished their mandate.
