Choquehuanca, 60, was inoculated after a controversy about his resistance to scientific immunization and his support for medicines of plant origin, according to his Aymara culture, the millenary Andean people.
Last year, the vice president opted for herbal treatments and other traditional methods to overcome the disease twice, according to his own account.
Despite showing himself as a “practitioner of ancestral medicine”, widely used in the country’s indigenous population, he is not considered an “anti-vaccine.”
“We have to protect our people with pharmacological medicine and natural, ancestral or traditional medicine; with the two medicines we have to protect and take care of the health of our people against the coronavirus,” said Choquehuanca, who requested “permission” from Pachamama with an offering before receiving the vaccine.
For his part, the Minister of Health, Jeyson Auza, said that Choquehuanca’s message was “very strong” because “it demonstrated above its beliefs that it protects the population.”
The Bolivian vice president was immunized two days after the Bolivian government put into effect the request for a vaccination certificate with a complete schedule for those who go to public places.
“As we have a decree now, I am respectful of the rules and all Bolivians have to comply with the rules, I am going to get vaccinated in the next few days, but I have immunity,” Choquehuanca said last week in an interview broadcast by F10 and collected by the Erbol network.
Those who for different reasons reject the vaccine, must carry a PCR or antigenic test carried out 48 hours before attending a public place.
The certificate began to be required also at airports or land travel terminals.
Some 4.6 million people were immunized with the complete scheme in Bolivia, that is, almost 40% of its population.
