India begins vaccinating teenagers for fear of the Omicron variant

Since then, health personnel have applied more than 1,400 million doses of anticovid vaccines, but less than half of the 1,300 million inhabitants of the South Asian giant have received the complete two-dose schedule, according to official data.

The authorities are concerned about the high contagion rate of the Omicron strain, with supersonic spread and extremely high contagion, although less deadly than its predecessor Delta, which is why new restrictive measures have been imposed in large cities since last week.

This morning, in the capital New Delhi, hundreds of teenagers were waiting with their parents in front of a school converted into a health center to take a first dose, the AFP news agency reported.

“It’s really a good thing to get your first vaccination,” enthused a 16-year-old teenager after injecting himself with a dose of Covaxin serum, made in India.

“It is a New Year’s gift for young people,” he celebrated.

India, the second worst affected nation by the scourge after the United States, recorded more than 27,000 new cases for a total of 34.9 million, the highest number since October.

The Health Ministry also reported 284 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to more than 481,000 since the arrival of the plague.

India has already reported more than 1,500 Omicron cases, with the highest number in the western state of Maharashtra.

Several states in the country, including the national capital New Delhi, have imposed restrictions to contain the outbreak, including night curfews, capacity limits in bars and restaurants and a ban on mass gatherings.

India, the world’s largest vaccine producer, suffered in May last year a catastrophic spike in infections caused by the Delta mutation, discovered for the first time in the country, with records of more than 400,000 cases and some 4,000 deaths a day.
