“His lawyers were denied access to him,” Yevgeniya Kara-Mursa wrote in an online post on Friday. She does not know how her husband is currently doing.
In mid-June, the long-time lawyer of the well-known Kremlin critic announced that Kara-Mursa had been transferred to a cell with difficult conditions in a Siberian penal colony for six months. The formal reason for the punishment was that he took his hands from his back for a few seconds to put his cap in its prescribed place, Kara-Mursa’s former lawyer Vadim Prokhorov wrote on Facebook.
Prokhorov, who has since fled Russia, has kept in touch with Kara-Mursa. A day earlier, Ilya Yashin, a close comrade of opposition activist Alexei Navalny, who died in custody, was given the same punishment.
Sentenced to 25 years in prison
Transferring prisoners to such punishment cells is a common form of harassment used by the prison administration, especially for political prisoners. The conditions there are particularly harsh. The cells are very cramped, the use of the beds after waking is prohibited, and daily walks in the yard are restricted. In addition, only one short meeting with relatives is permitted every six months – and even this only with the permission of the administration.
Kara-Mursa was sentenced to 25 years in a prison camp in April 2023 on charges of high treason. He is internationally considered a political prisoner. For years he has criticized the policies of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. The 42-year-old is in serious health after several poison attacks.
