Pandemic: More myopia expected in children

Some studies now show that this could have an impact on the eyes of girls and boys. As a result of the corona pandemic with limited leisure activities and a lot of time at home, ophthalmologists expect an increase in myopia in children.

“It is to be expected that during the pandemic, too close vision on cell phones or tablets has increased myopia among children,” said the spokesman for the professional association of ophthalmologists in Germany (BVA), Ludger Wollring. “We don’t have any data on this, but previous studies suggest this effect.” Daylight is an important factor in preventing nearsightedness in children. Even dim daylight is better than artificial light.

“Above all, long games on the cell phone or tablet can lead to myopia,” said Wollring. “In lockdown conditions with few leisure activities, parents should go out a lot with their children.”
