“Hooking up on the Internet” began around 20 years ago, and now 35 percent of all couples in this country find each other online. This is shown by the Summer Love Report of the dating platform “Parship”. And these are further results of the study carried out across Austria:
2.3 million Austrians have fallen in love with someone they met online. This happened most often to people from Vienna, closely followed by people from Lower Austria and Carinthia. “Online love” was least likely to happen to people from Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
Today, 35 percent of couples meet online, followed by “through friends and acquaintances” and “at work or through professional contacts.”
For 17 percent, the path led to the altar together, and 15 percent are happy to have one or more children together. “This means that around 350,000 children have now been born in Austria,” says Parship psychologist Caroline Erb.
In general, the younger the person, the more likely they are to find a partner online. Among 18 to 39 year olds, this figure is more than 60 percent; among 40 to 49 year olds, it is 51 percent – and from 50 onwards, the proportion drops.
Nowadays, every second person knows at least one couple in their circle of friends who found each other online.
According to the survey, for those under 30, it is “easier to write to someone online than to talk to them in real life.”
