Innviertler (36) faces trial in Regensburg for attempted manslaughter

A 38-year-old was injured at the Schwarzach folk festival.

In the early hours of May 30th, a dispute broke out between several people at the Schwarzacher Volksfest in the Straubing-Bogen district in Bavaria, according to the Lower Bavaria police. Among them, as the OÖN has now learned, was apparently a 36-year-old from the Ried district. A 38-year-old is said to have then thrown a wheat beer glass at the group of people from Innviertel. “This led to a physical altercation, during which the 38-year-old was attacked by a member of the group with kicks, including to the head,” says a press release from the Lower Bavaria police.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A short time later, the 36-year-old Innviertel resident was tracked down and arrested. In a press release on May 31, the police asked for relevant witness information. The 36-year-old was taken into custody after being brought before the investigating judge. The Regensburg public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation. “The public prosecutor’s office is currently assuming there is strong suspicion of attempted murder,” said Thomas Rauscher, senior public prosecutor and press spokesman for the Regensburg public prosecutor’s office, in response to an OÖN query. Numerous witnesses were questioned during the investigation. “However, they did not respond to the call for witnesses, but were identified by the police through questioning,” said Rauscher.

Charges likely

When asked whether charges of attempted manslaughter were on the cards, the prosecutor replied: “According to the current state of the investigation, charges seem likely, but the final assessment will be made after the investigation has been completed. This also applies to the allegation of a possible charge.” According to OÖN information, the Innviertel resident was released from custody in the Straubing correctional facility last Friday – at least temporarily. On Friday, a corresponding detention review took place. OÖN asked the accused in writing for a statement. This was outstanding at the time of going to press. The 36-year-old is presumed innocent.
