It was a “terrible and senseless act,” said New South Wales Premier Chris Minns on Monday. Homicide Squad Chief Danny Doherty said of the arrested man: “The 28-year-old appears to be responsible for several deaths.”
According to police, the 28-year-old’s seven children and their mother were in the family home at the time of the fire. Three children aged ten months, three and six years died in the fire. The four other children aged between four and eleven and their 29-year-old mother were taken to hospital, police said. Their injuries were not life-threatening.
Father in artificial coma
According to police, the father is now being investigated for multiple murders in connection with domestic violence. He prevented emergency services from entering the burning building and “acted with the intention of keeping the children in the house during the fire,” said Doherty. According to police, the suspect was arrested and placed in an artificial coma due to his own injuries. He is being treated in hospital under police observation.
