Representing the vacationing mayor Klaus Luger, City Planning Councilor Dietmar Prammer (both SP) today raised the flag of the “Mayors for Peace” on Linz’s main square. The initiative, which now has 8,403 cities in 166 countries and regions as members, has been calling for negotiations to begin on a treaty banning nuclear weapons since 1982. The network originated in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Linz has been a member since 2006. “We demand an end to the war. The deaths of people through war and the destruction of infrastructure must stop as quickly as possible,” says the statement by the Peace City of Linz on the war in Ukraine.
More than 12,000 nuclear weapons
The Mayors for Peace Flag Day is supported by the “nuclear weapons free now” campaign and commemorates the legal opinion of the International Court of Justice of July 8, 1996. According to this opinion, the use of nuclear weapons, and even the threat of their use, violates fundamental principles of international humanitarian law. Nine countries worldwide still possess almost 12,200 nuclear weapons.
