When Upper Austria’s universities belong to the children during the holidays

“How does it work?” – a question that is increasingly being asked by children. “We notice that even at a young age they are very curious and want to learn more. And the best way to do that is to get involved in research themselves and experience scientific processes first hand,” says Andreas Kupfer, who founded the Children’s University Upper Austria in 2004 as rector. “At that time, the universities and technical colleges realized that they could also offer a program for children and young people to promote the transfer of knowledge.”

2700 registrations so far

Over the past 21 years, the Children’s University program has continued to evolve – this year, a record number of events are being offered, with 450 workshops and excursions.

From microscopy to climate research, from music to blacksmithing, from DNA analysis to gliding: children and young people between the ages of five and 15 in Upper Austria can choose from a wide variety of topics. “This year, 2,700 children have registered, and there are still a few remaining places for some dates,” says Kupfer.

In Linz, Steyr, Wels, Hagenberg, Losenstein, Helfenberg and in Almtal, children and young people can experiment and research. “It was important to us that these were not just lectures or presentations. Instead, they work in smaller groups on specific topics. The lecturers can then also focus more on the individual participants,” says the Children’s University Rector.

Always new program

A special highlight in this year’s program of the Children’s University Upper Austria is the cultural focus due to the Salzkammergut Capital of Culture and the Bruckner Year.

“But our team also always tries to put together a creative program every year. Thanks to the great interest, certain courses have become permanent fixtures and are usually booked up immediately. But new offers are constantly being added,” say the organizers. “We are very pleased that this extracurricular project has been so well received right from the start.”
